How co-op works

Two players choose different Bergson family members for Story or Family Trials, either locally or online. Their distinct melee, ranged, healing, and defensive kits complement each other through procedural dungeons, while experience and family-wide upgrades strengthen later runs.

About this game

Children of Morta tells the story of the Bergson family, a clan of heroes bound by legacy and determination to protect their homeland from a spreading Corruption. This is a true cooperative action RPG, where you and a friend take on the role of different family members, each with their own fighting style, to push back the darkness together.

Gameplay centers on procedurally generated dungeons filled with enemies, secrets, and evolving challenges. You'll hack, slash, and cast your way through runs, unlocking permanent upgrades and new family members as the story unfolds. Playing with another person adds tactical depth, as different character builds complement each other and teamwork opens up aggressive strategies that solo runs can't match.

You can play online co-op or couch co-op with shared-screen action, making it ideal for both local sessions and remote partners. The narrative momentum and steady progression create satisfying joint sessions where communication and adaptability pay off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play couch co-op with a friend, or is it online only?

You can play both ways. Children of Morta supports local couch co-op with shared-screen play, as well as online co-op, so you can team up with someone on the same couch or play remotely.

Do both players control different family members with unique abilities?

Yes. Each player takes on the role of a different Bergson family member, and each character has their own distinct fighting style. This makes teamwork more interesting since different builds and abilities complement each other.

Does progress carry over between runs, or do we start from scratch each time?

Progress carries over. While the dungeons are procedurally generated for each run, you unlock permanent upgrades and new family members as you play, so you're always moving the story and your abilities forward.

How important is communication when playing co-op?

Communication helps a lot. The game rewards tactical teamwork and adaptability, so coordinating character abilities and strategies makes runs smoother and opens up more aggressive tactics than you'd have playing solo.
